This summer, to celebrate and supercharge the unique power of Black joy, Walmart sought to provide an all-access pass to summer through liberating content and experiences that help Black Zennials truly seize every moment of the season.
Adventure Series
Outdoor adventures have historically excluded Black explorers, but Black Zennials are seizing the narrative around their identities and interests and pushing boundaries on their forms of expression. To celebrate this reclamation of Black summer joy, we profiled two incredible adventurers actively redefining what adventure looks like. We also developed and sponsored an original challenge for each explorer, empowering them (and our audience) to find adventure in their backyards.
Episode 1: Hunter Jones Rediscovers Leo Carillo
As a pro surfer, Hunter has ridden all kinds of waves, but through this challenge, he uncovered exciting new aspects of his favorite hometown beach. We took Hunter to the beaches of Malibu during a rare local surf swell and had him assess every aspect of the surf conditions to catch the best wave possible. We took to a nearby trail to analyze the wind speeds, snorkeled underground to examine the body of the waves and climbed through caves to observe how the waves break until Hunter found the perfect moment to paddle out.
Episode 2: N’Dea’s St. Helena Solo Trip
Over 48 hours on St Helena Island, we challenged N’Dea to discover adventure in her backyard and as much authentic local culture as possible. She dove kitchen-first into local Gullah cuisine traditions picking fresh produce and practicing traditional recipes. She toured the St.Helena waters by boat, board, and along a guided horseback trail. And for a grand finale, she took flight over the island’s history landscape in a private biplane flying lesson. Through this blend of adventurous outdoor activity and culturally enriching local excursions, we curated a one-of-a-kind summer, solo travel experience. And by telling a story rooted in the true spirit of adventure, we aimed to remind audiences that Black travelers can and should do everything that excites them.
